In almost all of my client sessions this week, beloved ancestors (grandmas, mostly) came through with messages of love, hope, inspiration, and strength. Even though I have strong mediumship abilities, I don’t often intentionally contact folks that have passed on because I’d rather use my gifts to connect to the earth or to plant spirit energies.
However, that changes once we start approaching Halloween and Día de los Muertos on November 1st and 2nd. For the next 5 weeks, the veil between the spirit world and our physical world becomes incredibly thin. Spirits can easily reach out to us during this time and many ancestors are already coming through. There’s a reason that so many cultures around the world honor the dead and spirits during this time. Right now, it’s easier to connect to spirit guides and ancestors who have passed on. You’ve probably already noticed signs that your guides are around you! Maybe you’ve found yourself down a rabbit hole looking at old pictures. Or you smelled your grandfather’s cologne as you were running errands. My grandfather, who passed when I was 12, likes to turn lights on and off when he’s around. Whatever signs that you’ve received, please take this message as confirmation that your loved ones are reaching out to you.
In the vast majority of cases, your ancestors just want to celebrate you. Even if you never got to meet them before they passed, they’re rooting for you! They’re not here to scare you or dig up negative energies. You are their legacy, after all. They’re proud of how you’re using your gifts and they cheer you on when you conquer a challenge. If you’re going through a rough time right now, ask your ancestors for help. When you recognize that they’re around you, you can tap into their energy of support, love, joy, and connection.
Here’s how can you take advantage of the thinning veil and connect to your ancestors right now. My favorite way to connect to my ancestors is to tend to the plants that nourished them. Currently, I am growing genetic copies of plants that my great grandmother tended herself. I have other plants from my grandparents and from my parents. Just being in my garden transports me into a realm of love and protection.
However, even if you don’t have a garden, you can use plants to connect to your ancestors. There are plants that are native to the area where you live that have nourished people for thousands of years. I like to think of these reciprocal healing relationships as intergenerational friendships. When my great grandparents collected pecans and foraged chile pequín, they created a connection that gets stronger when I nurture pecan trees or find chile pequín plants growing in the wild. These plants and my ancestors have been connected for a very long time, which amplifies my own connection with them.
Plants hold the energy of that connection. Yesterday for example, I felt called to make nopales (sautéed prickly pear cactus pads) for lunch. The entire time I was cooking, I felt my ancestors around me. Prickly pears, Opuntia spp., are native to the Americas, and are particularly prolific in Mexico and central Texas where my family has lived for generations. So when I decided to prepare them for lunch, I echoed generations of my ancestors who did the exact same thing. When you consciously utilize plants in this way, with the intention of connecting to your ancestors, you unlock the magic of that connection.
So I encourage you to explore the plant kingdom. Find and honor plants that nourished your ancestors. If you know your grandma loved a particular plant, make an effort to bring that plant into your life. Buy yourself flowers that remind you of a loved one. You don’t have to do anything complicated. Your ancestors want to reach out to you in the same way you want to reach out to them. Over the next five weeks, I’ll highlight plants that nourish my own connection with my ancestors in celebration of the time ahead of Día de los Muertos.
If you’d like some assistance, I’d love to help you. Until November 2nd, I’m offering a 2-card oracle pull and channeled written guidance for $25.
The questions I’ll be answering for you are: What do my ancestors want me to know?Which plant energies are helping me right now?
